It’s nearly always a pleasure to take photographs of children. I say nearly because I can only think of one child I really found difficult to work with! Usually if we make the session fun, include them in decisions about where to be photographed and make sure there’s lots of time to play during the session all is well. My top tips are to let them choose the location - if they are having fun they are more likely to cooperate, get up close and personal, kneel down so you are right at their level and don’t be afraid to zoom in close and fill the frame. Let them see the images on the back of the camera. Children love this, sometimes I even let them take a photo. I get to photograph some incredibly photogenic children and the two below are no exception!

It just shows, you don’t need a big SLR to take great shots with real impact. I used my Dad’s compact camera to take this shot. It cost under £100 and there are limited controls so you can just concentrate on composing the picture - which I have to say is quite nice even though I’d never like to be without my Canon 5D. Often it’s not what equipment you are using, it’s all down to the light. This photograph was taken on Brancaster Beach at 6pm last Thursday at the end of the day when we get that gorgeous soft warm light. All along the North Norfolk Coast you get the most fanstastic light - it’s a bit like a giant light box. Just after I’d taken this shot there was a thunderstorm and the sky became incredibly dramatic. You can’t miss out on landscapes like these!

As photographers we are always learning, so back in August it was my turn to treat myself to a workshop with Tony Pick based down in Aldeburgh. Tony was a great teacher, and even got the lovely Holly to model for the day. For anyone who is a passoniate photographer I can thoroughly recommend one of Tony’s workshops. Truly inspiring. You can visit his website at www.tonypickportraiture.co.uk. Here’s a few of the days images.
